In 5th grade Mr. Williams told me I wasn’t good at math. In my little kid mind, I figured he knew something about me that I didn’t. He was the teacher after all, so I believed him.

In high school I took algebra three times, because I didn’t set myself up to study effectively. I took one look at the [(3 + 2) × (6 – 4) + 2] × 4.= 45, never mind those bracket thingys or knowing the order of operations. I could feel my eyes roll into the back of my head. How was I, someone who was “not good in math”, ever going to figure it out?

Fast forward to college and business statistics. The first part of the semester was a repeat of every other year I took math… less than awesome. Then, something clicked; I figured out how to break down the problems.

My grades soared and I went from a solid C to an A student in that class in just a few weeks.

What changed.? My belief in my ability to do math.

Yes, I had to work at it and change some study habits, but the block that I couldn’t figure it out was gone.

I had a new belief set.

The cool thing is that when you start believing something new, it actually changes the neural pathways in your brain. After a while all the pathways for that belief become more positive…more growth oriented. You start to see more opportunity in what you can do.

When I wanted to start a restaurant 10 years ago, I had no idea how to do 5-year financial projections or use a spreadsheet with formulas that tied to multiple sheets. Because I had changed the belief set “I’m not good at math” in college, the thought that I couldn’t do it didn’t occur to me. I just knew that I would figure it out.

Think about some of the things that you say to yourself.

I’m not good with money or numbers.

I can’t sell.

I’m not good at writing copy.

Social media is too complicated.

Every time you udder one of those sentences, your brain receives reinforcement of the story that you believe.

Those stories are what will keep your business from the true success it could be.

You don’t have to be a master at everything. That’s not what I’m saying.  Reframe your thought, even for a week to something like:

I am good at anything I choose.

Be aware of what happens. Do you feel more positive or like you could take on a new challenge? That’s your brain re-wiring itself.

I want you to see yourself as limitless, like anything is possible. So, I have a little gift for you to get you started with letting go of beliefs that may keep you playing small.  10 Days of Emi-ism is 10 days of simple inspiration, motivation and bite sized action steps can be the beginning of unlocking greater success and joy.
