We aren’t as productive as we could be.
And I do mean all of us.
If we were, there wouldn’t be hundreds, if not thousands, of books and trainings on productivity, performance, or habits and rituals. We spend well over $100 million in planners every year.
Yes, you might make to-do lists or even lists for your to-do lists. You manage multiple apps (Slack, Calendly, and Trello are some of my fav’s).
All of those tools are great and super helpful, and you are probably ignoring the one thing that can truly increase your ability to manage multiple projects and get things done effectively.
And that, my dear friend, is Brain Space.
Which is where my socks come in.
If I lived in a climate where it was above 50° year-round, I’d go barefoot or wear flip flops 95% of the time because I really don’t like socks… or shoes for that matter.
I also don’t like the time it takes to find matching socks or looking for the one my dryer ate. so, I just put on whatever I can grab first.
I have a million other things that I care about more than my socks and those are the things I want to focus my thoughts on. I also buy the same dresses in multiple colors. I don’t have to decide what to wear… I just pick a color.
Both Steve Jobs and Marc Zuckerberg are known for their “work uniform”; Black turtle neck for Jobs and grey t-shirt for Zuckerberg. They eliminated as many small decisions as they could so certain things, like putting on your socks, became automatic.
Decision making requires space in your brain as you weigh the “this or that” of everything.
In fact, when asked in an interview about his grey t-shirt, Marc replied:
“I really want to clear my life to make it so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community. There’s actually a bunch of psychology theory that even making small decisions, around what you wear or what you eat for breakfast or things like that, they kind of make you tired and consume your energy. My view is I’m in this really lucky position where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than 1 billion people, and I feel like I’m not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life, so that way I can dedicate all of my energy towards just building the best products and services and helping us reach our goal and achieve this mission of helping to connect everyone in the world and giving them the ability to stay connected with the people that they love and care about. So, that’s what I care about. Even though it sounds silly that that’s my reason for wearing a grey t-shirt every day, it is true.”
If you are a sock lover, and if you do great! Keep loving them. Instead look for areas where you can simplify or eliminate making decisions.
